Edmund Murphy's Biography

Edmund’s parents were Nicholas and Mary Bevins Murphy.  He was born in Augusta, Richmond, GA on24 Nov 1745to Nicholas Murphy and Mary Bevins. Edmunds first married to Ms. Sullivan appears to have resulted in two children; with his second marriage to Nancy Ann Rhodes, they reportedly had fifteen children.  

A letter in the Atlanta Constitution[1] on 4 Dec 1908 appeared from a granddaughter of Edmund. She explained that Edmund while serving in the GA troops, was captured by the British and imprisoned at Fort Grierson, He was released when the Fort was captured and its garrison surrendered in 1782.  At the close of the war, he was granted a section of land near the present site of Hephzibah, Richmond Co GA where he built his residence.

Before his death he served as an Indian Agent. He was buried in Murphey Cemetery, Hephzibah, Richmond GA next to his wife, and parents.
